Home security tips

Professionals frequently recommend getting to know your neighbors as the first step towards increasing safety not just in your home, but in your whole neighborhood. Something that used to go without saying in many small towns around the country is now considered by some, hardened by years of anonymous city living, as a quaint or bizarre activity. Whether you're new to the notion of introducing yourself to the neighborhood or just need a little bit of guidance in reviving the notion of a community effort, there's never been a better time to consider a return to good old fashioned neighborhood watch.

While a home alarm system might do the job of protecting your home, it will be a lot more effective if your neighbors actually care enough to call the police if they see someone breaking into your house, especially if you're out of town or cannot be reached by the alarm company. But more than just the safety of your specific home, a greater sense of security in the neighborhood is an incredible important aspect of living in a community. You don't have to be best friends with all of your neighbors, but it certainly helps to get acquainted.

For one thing, knowing who lives where accomplishes one very important task: you know who belongs in the neighborhood on a regular basis and who is a little bit suspicious for hanging around too often. This is a crucial step in getting everyone on the block acquainted: if no one knows who lives where, then how are you supposed to know that someone who's just been hanging out on the corner doesn't actually belong there? More than just robbery, this tactic helps in making sure that other illegal activities aren't a prominent part of your block.

Another helpful aspect of a neighborhood watch is the notion that more than one set of eyes accomplishes a lot more. You might miss something suspicious that could be a detriment to your home security, but if your neighbors up the block see it, then they can report it to the police and you can avoid a difficult situation. Likewise, if you know that there's an elderly individual in your neighborhood without help and see people creeping around her house, you can do a lot more help than far-away relatives who aren't able to respond quite as quickly.

For parents with children, it's quite helpful to to get involved in the community because it means a greater understanding of where it's safe to let your children play. More than that, it's always a relief for parents to organize play dates closer to home instead of having to haul the kids halfway across town to play with their other friends. Building connections in the community is a great help not just to maintaining your home security, but also to building your community ties and improving the lives of your family.

Don't forget that forming a neighborhood watch can also do a world of good with the relationships between any local businesses present and the people who live in the neighborhood. Local businesses will be relieved for the extra help, and might even be kind enough to provide some resources for meetings, like snacks or a place to gather besides someone's home. You'll be surprised at just how quickly you'll feel part of a neighborhood after a few talks with your neighbors
